Bo-jangling down the T4 -5 straight late in the race, I took a peek in the mirrors and saw a veritable stampede closing fast with the psychedelic Mali car near the front. Realizing I was out of Push-To-Pass and the herd would probably run me down in the Corkscrew, I put away my note pad and tried to remember what gear I was supposed to be in. Like a drunk 17 year old running the bulls, I tried to think of an escape route knowing theyd be stormin and swarmin 3 wide off the Corkscrew. When the dreaded moment arrived, I may as well been looking for refuge in Baghdad, so I tried to hold my line and let them go on either side going into 9. As Bill passed on the outside, I may have juked instead of jived, I dont know. Here's his recollection of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure:

I drove it off at the exit of turn 9, went through the gravel, of course never lifting, hit a rather large earthen jump at the end of the gravel and caught about 3 feet of "air" , blacked out when my car slammed to the ground, lost control and slid across the track just before the turn in to 10. Once I regained consciousness, I found myself in the gravel on the outside of turn 10, foot buried and heading back on track. Gave up about 5 or six spots in that smooth move but had enough race left to catch and pass Ted and John Ertel and at the end I had Jim in my sights but not enough time left to catch him. The force of slamming back to earth bent my rear wing down on both sides...looks like an F-1 wing now...hmmmm....possible speed secret. I'm sure that's not the only thing I will find wrong with it. I was planning on replacing all the rod ends this off season...now I guess I have to for sure.

Like Bob Eucher in a Frunt Roh seat, I thought I was witnessing the end of Bill's season. I saw him completely crossways to the line in the entrance to 10, slicing between cars like David Blaine magic and heading for the outside wall at speed. As I peered through the dust cloud searching for the apex of 10, I said a little prayer for the General, since I was sure I wouldn't be seeing him smiling anytime soon and at the very least, he was going to fail his next white glove inspection, something he hates with a passion. So, you can imagine that it was like seeing a ghost when he re-passed me in what seemed like the next lap. I was so flabbergasted, Ertel almost beat me to the finish line.
