I am gonna start a new thread that I am going to dedicate to posting questions i get from various FM owners, and the answers I give. I will keep it anonymous,
just thought this would be a good way to get more info out there.
Hope this helps everyone,

Wow, that's a good one | ||
Over Flow vent tubing from the rear cover of the gearbox was venting into the Coolant Catch Bottle Mo, someone really did that? Next time you're up this way, I'll buy the drinks if you regale us with stories of what all you've seen over the years !!! Kind of a "Mo stand up comedy" night.

Float Level | ||
|
Q: What is the proper float level for a FM carb
A: Here are the steps for setting the Float Level: 1) Remove the Bowl Cover a) Take off the fuel line from Carb Inlet b) Remove the Jet Inspection Cover c) Unscrew the 5 bolts that hold the cover in place 2) Remove the Gasket from the Bowl Cover. To do this you will need to remove the Float Pin (see pic below). Then re-install the float 3) While holding the Bowl Cover and Float upside down you want the top of the Float to be parallel to the Bowl Cover. This will measure 10mm. 4) The Float should travel 10mm. To measure lift the Float until it stops and measure from the Bowl Cover to the Top of the Float. 5) If you need to adjust, remove the Float from the Bowl Cover and use a pair of Needle Nose to gently bend the adjustment tabs (see pic below) This is the operating range that seems to work good for a Standard FM. You can fine tune this depending on engine, or track conditions. Raising the float will submerge the emulsion tube more making the main circuit richer. Lowering it will lean the main out. It also changes the RPM at which you go from the Idle jets to the Main Jets. Beleive it or not this is a fine tune, not a major. If your Float is set to these specs, you will very rarely have to change the float level. From here the you can do 99% of the tunning with Jets. When adjusting the float PLEASE remove it from the Bowl Cover. This way you can set it on a flat surface to adjust the tabs. Trying to do it while on the Bowl Cover, and just bending it with your fingers, can lead to an uneven balance between the two floats, making it hard to measure the actual Float travel, and tougher to tune. Let the float gently rest on the Needle. This will determine when the Float is full and fuel will stop being fed into the Bowl You want to measure the 10mm travel at the end of the float. This is the level at which the needle will be fully open feeing the Bowl with fuel. Remove the pin initially to remove the gasket. This will make measuring easier. Also remove the float to make any level adjustments. This tab adjusts the float "closed" level. This tab adjusts the travel length or the "open" level.

Thanks!!! | ||

Moses, this is so helpful. I was staring at a carb book and trying to figure out the float stuff last week with little success. This is perfect!
The other issue that I've been fighting is the dreaded stumble when the carb goes from low to high circuits. Any helpful tips or a process to work through would be great. Thanks again! |

Great job. I hear you are going to be racing for Bill up in Sacramento. He is a good guy. When you get up to Sacramento drop me a note we can get some of the local FM Guys and take the boat out on the river. Thanks Kevin Rogers |

Oil Pressure Warning | ||
|
Hello, During my last race this weekend, the oil pressure warning light came on and off. The pressure would read 60-65 then drop to 15, then back to normal,
and so on for the whole race. The oil level was OK at the end of the race. Do I have a sensor problem, or is there an oil pickup tube or something else that
could be wrong. Suggestions for evaluation/correction.

Spark plug cleaning & replacement | ||
|
Hey Mo, what should be the club racer's schedule and method for spark plug maintenance;
how often do they need to be cleaned? every event? how should the typical recreational yahoo racer clean them? by hand with brake clean, a wire brush and such or should we get one of the those $25 blaster sock pressure driven things? How many hours on a set before we cheap bastards should replace them? Thanks.

That's a great question. I used to check and clean mine before every race but I sorta felt like I was wasting time, so I don't even bother now. I just
keep the spare set handy to replace 'em if I need to, but that can't be the right way to do it.

Carb jetting | ||
|
Moses,
As a new guy to the car and carb adjustment, can you give us some pointers on selecting the right jets and adjusting for the changing enviornment? Also interested in how you recognize which way to go on the jetting or which jet to start with. As an example, at a recent race, it was cool and wet. Carb kept loading up to a point of almost fouling a plug while waiting on the grid. The car started great, but I turned down the idle screws about half a turn and it ran much better on the grid (thought the cool weather should have used actual indicated to open the jets a little) but start up was a little more difficult and required some pumping to get it to fire. Did not mess with it much more, but curious if I should have maybe given it a change in the air correction. I have been taught that these cars run really rich in order to run good at full throttle and get the torque off the corners. We might all benefit from some general indications and where to start tinkering. Thanks. |
